Recent research from the Brown School of Public Health published in the American Journal of Health Behavior found a new key to a balanced weight: the mindfulness diet, a correlation between mindfulness and plasma glucose levels

Mindfulness in the study is defined as “the ability to attend in a nonjudgmental way to one’s own physical and mental processes during ordinary, everyday tasks.” The awareness that emerges through paying attention on purpose in a non-judgemental manner allows us to remain in the present moment.

Those who followed the Mindfulness Diet were more mindful about food and eating and were more likely to have a normal plasma glucose level and therefore not be obese.  Mindful people were also more likely to believe they can change many of the important things in their life.

While this was a small study and show a correlation but do not prove a cause, it suggests that those practicing higher degrees of mindfulness may be better able to motivate themselves to live a healthy lifestyle and maintain  balanced physiology.

Other studies have also investigated the impact of mindfulness on weight and other health outcomes. For example, significant weight loss has been seen among participants in mindfulness interventions, although the exact psychological, behavioral and biological mechanisms are not fully elucidated.

We do know that the ability to slow down, pause and remain calmly in the present moment allows one to decrease stress, better recognize hunger signals and eliminate out-of-control and binge eating as well as overall anxiety.

Mindful eating–paying attention to the smell, taste, temperature and texture of the food, the dining experience and one’s hunger, fullness and other symptoms–adds to satisfaction, balanced eating and more intuitive eating.

Ready to Try the Mindfulness Diet?

If these sound like benefits you desire, you can try bringing more mindfulness to your life. Start by bringing greater mindfulness to the table each time you eat and reconnect with an intuitive way of eating.
