Earth Month is a perfect time to reflect on how your habits impact the environment and make a personal pledge to start some new environmentally-friendly habits.  Try these ways to help protect the earth and make sustainable, non-toxic choices that will also benefit your health!

Shop with Reusable Bags

Plastic bags and other debris can take up to 1000 years to decompose and often wind up clogging the oceans and rivers and leaching endocrine disrupting chemicals into the environment. Paper bags are often treated with toxic chemicals, making them no more environmentally friendly than plastic.

An average American family can save 750 plastic bags each year by switching to reusable bags. If you are searching for a simple, green, and low-cost alternative to disposable plastic bags, you can make your own upcycled t-shirt shopping bag

Bring along your own reusable totes when heading to the farmer’s market or grocery store. Bring your own bag to shop for other stables as well like clothing, office supplies and other regular purchases.

Be sure to remove your produce from the bags before storing, as the thick cotton may absorb too much moisture and cause them to wilt and fade more quickly. (This is another alternative to keep your food fresh and alive so that it lasts longer and creates less waste).

It is also important to wash your bags regularly to avoid contamination. Reusable shopping bags can become contaminated with bacteria from fresh foods and spread infectious diseases like E.coli.  Fortunately, this t-shirt shopping bag is easy to wash in your washing machine so it stays clean and healthy.

Buy in Season and Look for Local Options

Produce that is grown locally is fresher and retains more nutrition than that which is shipped long distances or stored over time. Buy fruits and vegetables that are in peak season where you live and shop locally at your farmer’s market or local farm when possible.

The shorter distance your food travels, the smaller its carbon footprint and the fresher and more delicious it will taste! You can also cultivate meaningful relationships with your local farmers and truly know how your food is being grown and where it comes from. Shopping in season is also a great way to keep things interesting as you are inspired to experiment with new foods and recipes during the year.

Refill, Reuse, and Shop in Bulk

Buying pantry stables in bulk is a great way to reduce packaging waste and also save money. Look for stables like grains, beans, cereals and pasta in the bulk bins and store them to glass or ceramic containers.

There are also some eco-friendly, less-waste options you can select for personal care products. For example, Plaine Products makes refillable bath and body products that allow you to reduce your use of plastic and live a less waste lifestyle. I look for environmentally-friendly soap and other personal care product options that are also safe for the skin. For hand and body washing, I choose organic options without parabens, synthetic fragrances, phthalates, triclosan, artificial dyes, and SLS (sodium laurel sulfate). To make your choice more sustainable and less-waste, look for soap bars that are wrapped in paper or refillable bottles for liquid soaps like Plaine Products’ hand wash

Choose Green and Non-Toxic Building Products and Methods

When you need to make repairs or additions to your home, choose green building methods that help protect your family while being more gentle to the planet. Look for zero VOC paints, sustainable materials and furniture made with naturally durable and flame resistant materials instead of chemically-treated fibers.

Make Your Own Non-Toxic Cleaning Supplies

Fragrances found in detergents, soaps, cleaners and air “fresheners” introduce harmful chemicals into our homes that can impair our hormones, disrupt our metabolism and destroy our health and planet. Choose to clean cleanly by buying non-toxic options or making your own natural cleaners.

Try my favorite non-toxic all purpose cleaner to get started! This simple and cost-effective solution gets things clean without adding chemicals to your home. I also shared some eco-friendly ways to protect yourself and others from infection and illness in my sustainable personal protection kit here. For example, while plastic disposable gloves end up filling up landfills, there are more sustainable options. Eco Gloves use renewable plant-based materials that are biodegradable and compostable. The production process also emits less carbon than traditional standard plastics, latex and nitrile alternatives.
