Stress is simply the brain and body’s response to any demand, whether perceived or real. It involves a normal set of emotional, physical and cognitive reactions to a changing, demanding environment that can either enhance our ability to handle change or impair our coping when we become overwhelmed.

Many situations can trigger stress responses in the body including real or perceived positive or negative changes. Changes can be mild and non-threatening or more severe like divorce, serious illness, an accident or exposure to trauma or violence.

Stress has a significant impact on our body and health. It damages the heart, immune system and brain, especially when chronic and unrelenting.#Stress: a lifestyle epidemic that you can overcome! #wellness #health #healthy #stressmanagement #relax #relaxataion #calm #meditation #yoga #happiness www.JenniferWeinbergMD.com

So often we are focused on “doing” rather than “being.  This takes a significant toll on your health and wellness since stress is a major contributor to so many illnesses. While living stress-free is not realistically possible or even necessarily desirable since stress is simply our response to demands, you can learn to cope with stress in a way that protects your health. A constant state of stress prevents us from enjoying life as we strive to do more, get more and be more. We forget about the simple pleasures and blessings in our lives.

The approach I take in The Whole Cure and The Whole Cure Lifestyle Transformation Program aims to address chronic stress by teaching you how to build a life with reduced stressors while simultaneously increasing resiliency. Finding meaningful stress management strategies that resonate with you allows you to build resilience to cope with life.

Resilience is the ability to successfully adapt in the face of adversity and demands. In this way, we can handle the inevitable stressors in life without suffering the negative physical and emotional impacts.

It is impossible to avoid stress entirely, but we can build our stress management skill set for coping with demands instead  of becoming overwhelmed. Next time you feel under stress, try one of the strategies below to help manage it and protect your long-term health!

Meaningful Simple Pure WholeTM Stress Management Strategies

Rest & Rejuvenate

Despite a crazy to-do list, prioritizing sleep is crucial for beating stress. Ayurvedic Medicine encourages us to synchronize our lives with the natural cycles of nature. By going to sleep before 10pm each evening and arising before 6am with the cycles of the sun, we can fall asleep more easily and waken more refreshed. Aim for a consistent bedtime that will allow you to get at least 7-8 hours of sleep each evening. Practice good sleep habits and keep your bedroom calm, dark, quiet and free of technology so you can fully relax.

Move Outdoors

Both movement and nature are so healing to the body and mind. We have evolved to be more relaxed in natural spaces and to be in touch with the earth.

Nature has a profound impact on our brains and behavior. Research backs up the natural sense we have that nature reduces anxiety and helps decrease stress. One study from Japan showed that participants who walked in forests had significantly lower heart rates, more heart rate variability (indicating a more relaxed physiological state), better moods and less anxiety than those who walked in urban settings. Even just gazing out a window at a natural scene can soothe our nervous systems and relieve stress.

Movement works synergistically with the stress-relieving power of nature. Exercise boosts endorphins which help boost the mood and combat stress. Being outdoors in nature can augment those benefits.

Take a hike in the woods or along the beach and breathe in the calming force of nature. Take time to play outdoors or run around outside with your children or pets. Try a walking meeting outside or take a break during your day to get out into nature.

Notice and acknowledge the discomfort. #Stress: a lifestyle epidemic that you can overcome! #wellness #health #healthy #stressmanagement #relax #relaxataion #calm #meditation #thewholecure #yoga #happiness www.JenniferWeinbergMD.com

Ground and Center Yourself

The simple act of slowing down, quieting the mind and going inward, can help you develop your ability to be present. In turn, this can strengthen your connection to your authentic purpose, giving you a clearer sense of passionate devotion. One of the most powerful ways to reduce the negative impacts of stress is to cultivate the ability to be more present in each moment.

Practice, finding a calm space in the midst of the craziness of your day to sit in stillness and simply notice what is actually going on in your life. You can train your mind to find stillness with a practice of meditation, yoga or guided relaxation exercises

When you are faced with a stressful situation, take a moment to pause before reacting. Take some deep breaths and ground yourself in the present moment. Notice and acknowledge the discomfort and stress and then relax and release the tension, no matter how urgent it seems. Be still and present with the situation and your emotions and let the energy pass through. Feel the ground beneath you, smell the air  passing by, imagine the energy connecting you to the world around you. Notice the freedom you gain by settling into the present moment as it unfolds before you and taking back your power to choose how to react.

Commit to Small Steps

Stress management should not become another burden or to-do on your list. Instead, it can be a way of living, thinking and being that builds your resiliency and gives you a sense of peace despite what may be going on around you.

BONUS TIP and MEDITATION GIFT: Don’t forget to breathe!

One of the most powerful ways to stay calm and centered to counteract the physical and emotional impacts of stress is to breathe optimally. Deep, relaxing breathing into the lower lungs balancing the nervous system and allows you to connect to the present moment, setting the stage for healing.
