We are exposed to so many substances through the food we eat, the air we breathe, the water we drink and the products we use in our homes and on our bodies. This can build up in the body, impairing the normal function of many systems and overwhelming the body’s natural ability to detoxify.

So many of the health issues that my clients deal with–ranging from autoimmune conditions, metabolic imbalances, weight issues, chronic stress and skin issues–are related to inflammation and toxicity. Many of us can benefit from boosting our bodies’ natural detoxification mechanisms to help us re-balance.

Implementing Home Near Infrared Sauna Therapy

Many healing traditions and wellness protocols utilize the power of heat and light, relaxation and enhanced detoxification. Saunas have long been used to bring about sweating, relaxation and purification. In general, saunas use a heat source in an enclosed space to raise the body temperature and induce sweating. Sweating is one of the ways our bodies naturally get rid of unwanted toxins.

Near infrared saunas combine the heat therapy of traditional saunas with low-level light therapy to provide further benefits. A Near infrared sauna (NIR) uses lamps with Tungsten filaments in Edison heat lamps which produce beneficial visible red and near infrared (600-950nm) rays (Chung et al. 2011), which mimic those elements of natural sunlight.  These tungsten heat lamps also produce almost no harmful electromagnetic fields (EMFs) and gently heat the body from within.

#Health benefits of near infrared sauna therapy: a powerful and unique way to influence mitochondria for antiaging, #wellness and longevity! #sauna #infared #healthy #light #nearinfrared www.jenniferweinbergmd.com

Near infrared sauna light has been shown to deeply penetrate tissues up to a depth of 9 inches (23 cm) compared to around 1.5 inches for far infrared light which is also more scattered. Our cells contain tiny photoreceptors called chromophores which are selectively receptive to and absorb these near infrared rays. In fact, the mitochondrial photo-receptors (cytochrome oxidase) are only stimulated by 600-950nm light (visible red is 600-700nm, near infrared is 700-1100nm). Once activated by NIR light, chromophores influence a variety of metabolic pathways that influence healing, inflammation, detoxification and rejuvenation. This directed, deep light also provides sufficient heat for effective hyperthermic therapy.

Check out Part II of this series on near infrared sauna therapy for a more in-depth look at the science and power of this method.

Some key tips I have found to make the overall experience of home sauna therapy more effective and enjoyable are:

  • Stay well hydrated with filtered water before and during use
  • Start off sauna use slowly and carefully
  • Shower off sweat and toxins after each use with a natural, fragrance-free soap
  • Check with a health care provider before beginning sauna therapy to discuss your unique needs, health conditions and sensitivities. It is advised that pregnant women and young children avoid sauna use.
  • Supervision during sauna therapy is also helpful to ensure safety
  • Always relax after a sauna session to allow the body to readjust before going back to daily activities
  • Many find it most therapeutic to utilize the sauna first thing in the morning or last thing before bed at night when one is most relaxed and the therapy may be more effective

A Convenient High-Quality Near Infrared Sauna Option: The SaunaSpace Luminati Pocket Sauna

I have personally been searching for a sauna option to support health rejuvenation and detoxification for quite some time. There are a wide variety of sauna types, models, features and price-tags out there and the options can be a bit overwhelming to sift through.

#Health benefits of near infrared sauna therapy: a powerful and unique way to influence mitochondria for antiaging, #wellness and longevity! #sauna #infared #healthy #light #nearinfrared www.jenniferweinbergmd.com

Given the unique benefits, I searched for a sauna model utilizing near-infrared technology. I personally desired a way to both support deeper detoxification, encourage healing from chronic infections, and enhance parasympathetic function and deeper relaxation. A near-infrared sauna offered the best range of therapeutic benefits without requiring too extreme heat temperatures, which can be difficult to tolerate, especially for those with chronic illness, autonomic instability or other issues.

During my search, I also found that many sauna models are large, require a dedicated electrical line, are made with toxic materials or emit large amounts of harmful EMFs–all aspects which I wanted to avoid. I also needed to stick to a reasonable budget and only had a small space to dedicate to a sauna in my home.

Through my extensive research process, I was excited to learn about a powerful, affordable and high-quality option from SaunaSpace. As I investigated this further and spoke with Brian Richards, the CEO and founder of SaunaSpaceI learned more about the product and thoughtful design and have become encouraged to have found a hypo-allergenic, low/no-EMF, compact, high-quality option that fit within my budget and space constraints.

Take a peek inside the Pocket Sauna…

I recently purchased a Basswood SaunaSpace Luminati Pocket Sauna unit from SaunaSpace. This is a lightweight option crafted from untreated basswood, which is a zero-VOC rated wood species, an important consideration for me given my extensive chemical sensitivities.

It arrived as a set of hypoallergenic basswood frame poles which are easily locked together without the need for tools, glues or toxic plastics. An untreated bamboo mat fits into the trapezoidal ground footprint.

The assembled SaunaSpace Luminati Pocket Sauna is approximately 4 feet wide and 5 feet tall, providing adequate space to comfortably sit and move about inside.

The SaunaSpace Luminati Pocket Sauna is available with a 3 or 4 lamp light panel which contains ultra-low EMF tungsten near infrared sauna lamps housed in a safe wire guard. It simply plugs into a standard wall outlet with no need for a dedicated or special electrical line.

The light panel is fully height-adjustable for use with the optional handcrafted wood stool, a wheelchair or your own seating.

A dual-layer cotton canvas cover fits over the wooden frame and maintains a proper 110-120oF temperature range for healing and relaxation. It is made from 10 oz cotton duck which is naturally sourced, machine washable and pre-shrunk with a 100% chemical-free process.

You can customize your SaunaSpace Luminati Pocket Sauna to meet your unique needs and budget.

All parts of the SaunaSpace Luminati Pocket Sauna are hand-crafted from materials sourced in the USA and crafted without toxic finishes, glues or out-gassing products.  You can choose from untreated hypoallergenic zero-VOC rated basswood or untreated low-VOC rated poplar wood frames, which are all sustainably harvested in North America. Hardware is made from double-plated chromed steel with no plastic, glues, synthetics or aluminum.

I really appreciate the thought and careful evolution of design put into this product to make a high-quality, affordable and healthy option. After speaking extensively with Brian, I really believe that SaunaSpace truly stands behind their products and constantly strives to improve them further. They offer a lifetime warranty and a 100-day money back guarantee, so you can test it out and see if it suits your needs.

My Pocket Sauna Experience: Relaxation, Rejuvenation and Detoxification

I have been using the SaunaSpace Luminati Pocket Sauna several days a week as part of my healing and wellness routine. My experience thus far has been quite therapeutic. I look forward to the dedicated time and space to take a break in my day and find the gentle heat quite conducive to meditation and relaxation. I have also found that it was great for preventing the winter blahs or seasonal depression that tends to creep in during cold, dark winter days, but it is not uncomfortable to use during warmer weather.

With regular use, one of the most powerful benefits I have experienced is supported detoxification and ability to cope with my intense environmental sensitivities and allergiesMy digestion is improving with regular use as well. I am also excited to follow-up with laboratory testing after several months of regular use to see how my toxicity, hormone and heavy metal levels are impacted.

Currently, I am spending about 20 minutes several days each week in the gently pre-heated (for about 10 minutes) SaunaSpace Luminati Pocket Sauna.

I look forward to sharing more about my experience with the SaunaSpace Luminati Pocket Sauna in the upcoming weeks as well as diving deeper into the fascinating science behind near infrared sauna benefits in Part II of this series here!

I believe in the benefits of infrared sauna therapy and try to go to my local wellness center to use their sauna as often as possible. I tried out a portable sauna like the Pocket Sauna at the New Life Expo in my city. It was wonderful so I can really appreciate why you enjoy yours. We’re so glad you shared this healthy resource with us at the Healthy, Happy, Green and Natural Party Blog Hop. I’m Pinning and sharing!

    HI Dr, Jennifer,
Very interesting post. I used to have a infrared red sauna but had to sell it because I just couldn’t use it – the heat caused my adrenal glands to act up – at the time I had chronic fatigue really bad and many other issues. I did use it for over a year until I had to stop and I kept it for quite sometime hoping that things would change in my body but it was taking up so much room in my house and nothing seemed to changing. I do believe they are very useful and healthful for most people. What your describing is little different and more portable than want I had, but seems to have the same health benefits. Thanks for sharing on Real Food Fridays. Pinned & tweeted!
