Eat Clean and Organic

Whole foods like fruits and vegetables are a great way to keep the body balanced and naturally cleanse. Repletion of important nutrients is important for allowing the body to detox from heavy metals and heal. Since many conventional pesticides and herbicides contain heavy metals and other chemicals, it is important to choose organic produce and other products. to reduce heavy metal toxicity

  • Choose organically-grown produce and humanely raised, free-range, organic animal products.
  • Eat foods that are natural, unprocessed and organic including plenty of fruits and vegetables that support detoxification and healthy fats to allow your body to detoxify naturally.
  • My virtual Reset Cleanse is a great way to start optimizing your lifestyle to support detoxification and keep your body balanced!
  • Garlic has been shown to help lower blood lead levels.
  • Many recommend a seafood-free diet while detoxing from heavy metals, since many fish and seafood are contaminated with these toxicants.
  • Antioxidants like selenium, zinc, and vitamins C, E, and A may help the body detoxify.

Remove and Avoid Toxicity

  • Consider a near-infrared sauna to support healthy detoxification.
  • Avoid dental amalgam fillings.
  • Avoid smoking and second-hand smoke exposure.
  • Support liver detoxification with good nutrition, adequate antioxidants and individualized supplements when necessary like glutathione and magnesium. Glutathione is a key detoxification protein which helps clear heavy metals and other toxins from the body. Foods which support healthy glutathione levels include:

Interesting post! I didn’t know about the toxicity effects at all, but I have noticed that food tastes better that’s cooked in stainless steel than on non-stick wares.

    HI Dr Jennifer,
I have had for many years a problem with heavy metals – i get rid of one and another one shows up. I did get my mercury level down by getting new amalgams which is a process. The sad part is that every one of the mercury filling had a cavity under which the dentist sad is usually the case and the one a year after I got it removed still got infected and had to have the tooth removed anyway. Thanks for sharing all this valuable information – I don’t think most people understand the danger of heavy metals in the body. Thanks for sharing on Real Food Fridays. Pinned & tweeted!

Hi Marla! I am sorry that you have also dealt with heavy metals and their impacts. They do seem to be a common issue that not too many people are aware of. Thank you for sharing and hosting 🙂

Interesting, I had never heard that about garlic. And thankfully, I like all the foods on that list of foods which support healthy glutathione levels!

Great tips! I see that I am doing ok with foods that support healthy glutathione except for asparagus– that’s not always available where I am. A downside to living in NYC is that we don’t get the freshest veggies year round. And there is probably a lot more metal in this environment too.

Thank you Elysha! Asparagus can be a tough one to get fresh and locally during much of the year, but I love to find some fresh at my farmer’s market in the Spring!
