There are many fantastic non-dairy milk options and hemp milk is one of my favorites! This creamy homemade version of hemp milk is quick and easy to whip up with no soaking required. It has a naturally nutty flavor and packs a nutritious punch with healthy fatty acids and protein. I am sharing two of my favorite ways to enjoy this delicious vegan option–pure creamy vanilla and spiced!

Hemp Seeds: Providing a Nutritious Base for Hemp Milk

Hemp milk is a mild tasting non-dairy milk option derived from hemp seeds. Like other hemp food products including hemp protein powder, hemp seed bars and hemp oil, hemp milk is derived from the Cannibus sativa plant, but does not contain significant amounts of the “drug” part of the plant known as tetrahydrocannabinol (THC).

As I mentioned in my Dec/Jan favorites post about hemp oil, hemp seeds are rich in plant-based omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids like ALA and gamma-linolenic acid (GLA) which have anti-inflammatory benefits. Hemp also provides electrolytes and minerals like potassium, phosphorous, magnesium and calcium along with all 10 essential amino acids and vitamin A

Homemade hemp milk: a #healthy #vegan non-dairy milk alternative from www.JenniferWeinbergMD.comHemp seeds are a great way to add protein and healthy omega-3 fatty acids to baked goods, smoothies and other recipes! I used hemp milk in my vegan Cozy Hot Cacao for its creamy consistency that is a bit thicker than most other non-dairy milks or skim milk. Hemp seeds also provide a lovely mild nutty flavor that complements many recipes including my Gluten-Free Blueberry Coconut Pecan Granola!

Hemp milk is one of the simplest non-dairy milks to make at home. Unlike nuts like almonds, hemp seeds do not need to be soaked. Hemp seeds are readily available in many grocery or health food stores or online. Try this simple recipe to whip up a batch of hemp milk of your own!

While the classic vanilla option is delicious and versatile on its own or own a bowl of homemade gluten-free granola, my favorite is the spiced version. This blend of savory spices that I higtlighted in my previous blog post packs a flavorful punch that masks some of the natural earthy flavor of the hemp seeds. It also provides warming digestive spices, helps balance the blood sugar and boosts your immune system with the blend of savory medicinal spices. It is a lovely treat on its own or blended with some tea for a Hemp Chai Latte!

    HI Dr Jennifer,
This recipe for hemp milk sounds simple to make a great healthy alternative milk I always believe homemade is so much better than buying from a commercially made product. Even if they are organic – there is so much additives and greenwashing going on that you seems no to be worth price. Thanks for sharing on Real Food Fridays. Pinned & tweeted!
