Here are some of my Simple | Pure | WholeTM Healthy Favorites for October!

Favorite Ingredient: Cardamom

Cardamom is both a culinary and therapeutic spice with special benefits for addressing fall health issues. This spice is commonly used in Indian cuisine and Ayurvedic medicine with its peppery, citrusy flavor and warming quality

Cardamom_pods_-_Green_BNCCardamom contains manganese, potassium, iron, calcium, magnesium, niacin and vitamin C along with a variety of antioxidants. It is used in a similar way to ginger to heal the digestive tract and combat gas, bloating, nausea and heartburn. It also supports healthy detoxification, with diuretic properties to clean out the urinary tract and antioxidants to reduce inflammation. Cardamom is also a powerful bronchodilator and helps clear mucus.

I love the unique flavor that cardamom brings to both sweet and savory dishes and highlight it’s special spiciness in my Gluten-Free Ginger Coconut Cashew Granola Bars and Oatmeal Cookie Gluten-Free Vegan Apple Crisp as well as being one of the potent therapeutic spices in my Balancing and Detoxifying Hot Spiced Turmeric Milk, a great warming beverage to help you prevent fall colds!

  • Look for green (sometimes referred to as small) cardamom which has a more complex flavor to compliment both sweet and savory dishes.
  • You can use both whole or ground cardamom. Cardamom pods will stay potent longer than already ground seeds. You can quickly grind the inner seeds with a spice grinder or mortar and pestle for fresh, flavorful spice. Alternatively, heat whole pods in oil to release the essential oil and simmer them with quinoa or rice for a lovely pilaf.
  • Add a chai spice flavor to your coffee or tea by adding whole cardamom to your coffee beans before brewing or stirring ground cardamom into your beverage. Or warm up with my Balancing & Detoxifying Hot Spiced Tumeric Milk
  • Add a citrusy-peppery punch to sauteed greens by sprinkling them with a pinch of cardamom.

Favorite Healthy Product: Berkey Boroux Bottles

Supporting the body with clean water is a key part of the Simple | Pure | Whole Wellness Solution. For many years, I have been filtering my drinking and bath water with a Berkey water filter and Berkey shower filter to remove harmful contaminants.

Boroux-Starter-Kit-300To store the filtered water, Berkey just released a new line of Boroux Bottles which are constructed entirely out of nontoxic glass and stainless steel. These 500mL glass bottles are great for storing and transporting your pure, clean water, fresh juices or smoothies and have a nice wide opening for inserting ice cubes, fruit or herb infusions, etc. This also allows for easier and more complete cleaning, and the bottles are also dishwasher safe. To ensure that no part of the bottle that touches water leaches any harmful chemicals, the leak-proof cap is  made of stainless steel with a water tight seal.

Favorite Farmer’s Market Find: Apples

Apples_fall produce

Apples are a natural symbol of fall, with their brilliant red, orange, yellow and green colors and crisp texture. Apples belong to the Rose family along with apricots, plums, cherries, peaches, pears, raspberries and almonds.

Phytonutrients in apples have been shown to have a wide range of health benefits. Polyphenols in apple skins can help regulate blood sugar levels, while flavonids like quercetin are natural anti-histamines that help prevent allergies.

Interestingly, recent research suggests that some of the health benefits of apples may stem from their impact on the bacteria in our digestive tracts. Apples alter the levels of important bacteria in the large intestine, altering our metabolism and providing benefits such as nourishing the cells lining our intestine.

"THE WORLD AS WE HAVE CREATED IT IS A PROCESS OF OUR THINKING. IT CANNOT BE CHANGED WITHOUT CHANGING OUR THINKING." How are you creating your reality? #thewholecure

Recently, I have really been focusing on the power and responsibility I have to choose how to react to my thoughts instead of allowing them to over power me. I often see how this really impacts my clients' lives too. Last week on the blog (www.JenniferWeinbergMD.com) I shared some of my favorite tips for reframing to a #positive mind. Have you seen the power of #mindset choice in your life?
