The Whole Cure Wellness Wednesdays: Make 2016 the Year You Actually Achieve Your New Year Goals

New Year Goals

Happy New Year! I hope you had a joyous holiday season and are refreshed to enjoy 2016! The New Year brings a time of promise, excitement and renewed dedication to achieve our New Year goals. Many of us use this as a fresh start to kick a bad habit, dedicate ourselves to a new meditation routine, be more active or try out a new style of eating.

While setting goals and intentions for a healthier lifestyle can boost our health and self-development, it can also set us up for spiraling into despair and giving up at the first stumble.

How can you stay motivated to make 2016 the year you actually achieve your New Year goals?

Start with these Simple | Pure | WholeTM strategies for achieving your New Year goals this year:

Be Realistic

Be Realistic

Having high expectations for yourself is great, but be careful to set goals which are realistic and achievable to avoid setting yourself up for failure from the start.

The best way to do this is to get in touch with your true motivations and develop goals that are truly meaningful for you. Your best friend may thrive off a raw vegan diet or your sister feel great with her pilates routine, but you need to consider what you truly desire and what will work for your unique body, lifestyle and desires

Steer clear of setting unreasonable resolutions or being unrealistically ambitious. It is usually more productive to choose a target that is attainable as well as sustainable so that you can create lasting, impactful changes.

Assess where you currently are and what you are already doing in your life. Then make a reasonable adjustment or addition or, alternatively, consciously choose to remove something else that is not serving you to make room and energy for a new, attainable goal.

Take it Step-by-Step

step-by-step

While you may be ready to dive head first into your New Year goals right now and give it all that you have, remember to pace yourself so that you will have the energy you need to make lasting, meaningful change. I find that my clients are much more successful at achieving true lasting improvements in their health and lifestyles when they take it step-by-step.

Take small steps to take care of yourself so you are not exhausted. Feed your body with healthy, balanced, nourishing real foods; get enough quality rest; take breaks throughout the day to take some deep breaths or get outside in nature.

Schedule in “You” Time

schedule you time

You may be great at filling up your calendar with work obligations, meetings or the kids’ activities, but building in time for yourself is key to reaching your New Year goals. If you are truly committed to achieving change, set aside the time you need to work on it.

Start finding space in your busy schedule for you. Whether it is penning in time to take your yoga classes, making a date to visit the farmer’s market for fresh produce or booking in time to take a nice hike outdoors, schedule in “you” time.

Don’t Do It Alone

Don't Do It Alone

While your New Year goals have to come from within you and be meaningful to you for them to stick, you don’t have to do it all alone. Support and accountability are key to crafting a well-thought-out plan and keeping up the strength, confidence and energy to stick with it.

A trusted friend, health care provider, support group or health coach can be a great ally in helping you set and achieve your New Year goals. Reaching out to a trusted partner helps us clarify our goals, take a realistic approach and overcome mindset hurdles and challenges that arise along the way.

Enlist someone to provide support and accountability. Someone you can depend on to ask about your goal, keep you motivated and inspire you to move forward towards your vision. Someone who can help you come up with solutions when things get in the way and propel you forward to where you want to go. Investing in a partner or coach to keep you accountable and provide support will keep you engaged and change the whole experience of achieving your New Year goals for the better!

I loved everything you wrote. I agree that having an acocountability partner can be essential to success. I am still working on getting in the adequate self-time. Having a large family makes that difficult most days, but I try.

Thank you for sharing at the Healthy, Happy, Green And Natural Party Blog Hop.
