The holidays are a time for gratitude, celebrations, joy, family, friends and of course gifts. Bombarded with advertising and marketing trying to convince us that we need the latest and greatest, we can lose the art of giving thoughtful gifts. While we can often get caught up in the consumerism of the season, remembering to remain thoughtful of the gifts we choose can make a difference for our relationships, health and the planet!

As you start thinking about the Holiday gift-giving season, I want to share a series of posts with healthy, non-toxic, mindful and thoughtful gifts. These are things, experiences and tools that you can share with your loved ones during the holidays or any time to celebrate your friendship, show your appreciation and support a healthy lifestyle!

How to Be a Thoughtful, Healthy Gift Giver: A Mindful Approach to Giving Thoughtful Gifts

Mindfulness is not just for the yoga mat. Indulging your loved ones with thoughtful gifts that uplift, comfort and inspire retains the true spirit of the season. This year, give your family and friends gifts that will support and not harm their health. Choose presents that nourish the mind, body and spirit while also supporting the health of the recipient and the planet!

To get started giving mindfully, consider these strategies for giving mindfully and stay tuned to the blog for a series of mindful gift guides over the next few weeks! These strategies, like the others I share in my Fun and Festive Holiday Challenge, will help you feel calm and connected during the busy holiday season!

A Mindful Approach to Gift Giving

Give Presents of Presence

We each have unique skills and talents. Offering someone your time and expertise can be a truly thoughtful gift. Create a pretty gift certificate for babysitting hours, gardening, house cleaning, meal preparation, lawn mowing, massage or another service the recipient will appreciate.

Maybe you have a special talent that you can share by providing lessons for a loved one. Cooking, music, painting, photography, yoga or fishing lessons can be a heartfelt way to share time with a special person and share your passions.

Share Heartfelt Memories

A heartfelt note can be a gift in itself. Offer forgiveness, gratitude or love to remind someone you care about that they are cherished.

Similarly, gratitude or memory jars can be meaningful and thoughtful gifts especially for older relatives or friends. Contact friends and family members of the recipient and have them submit cherished memories of the person, a favorite photo or something they appreciate about the person. Place these all in a jar, decorated box or special journal so that the recipient can choose one memory each day during the upcoming year and see what other people cherish about him or her.

Personalize It

When planning a gift, think about who the recipient truly is and what she values. Recall what makes him laugh or what his true passion is.

Use this to inspire heartfelt, personalized, thoughtful gifts. If your aunt hates to run to the grocery store, consider a healthy meal delivery service, providing regular grocery runs for her or organic produce delivery.  If your brother is passionate about nature and loves spending time in the wild, perhaps he would value a tree planted in his name or a donation in his honor to a relevant conservation organization.

Gifts that let the recipient know that you see their true self and honor their inner beauty are truly powerful and deepen your connections.

“It’s not how much we give but how much love we put into giving.” — Mother Teresa

Bonus Tip: Try a healthy, eco-friendly alternative to wrap your gifts. Choose reusable and attractive organic cotton gift wraps, towels or fabrics to add function and beauty while avoiding printed papers which can contain toxic inks and fill up landfills.

Embrace the spirit of the season and take the time to put thought and care into each and every gift you give! You will find that a little mindfulness adds tremendous value to the process of honoring our loved ones during the holidays or anytime throughout the year!
