If you have brain fog, persistent fatigue, sluggish digestion or chronic illness,  it is likely that toxic accumulation is contributing to your imbalances. 

The environment is filled with toxic insults in our air, water and food. Most chronic diseases are influenced by harmful impacts of our modern lifestyles and environment. Diets deficient in true nutrition and stuffed with additives, preservatives, refined sweeteners and overly processed ingredients stress the body and contribute to imbalance.

Fortunately, our bodies are naturally built to detoxify daily to eliminate and neutralize chemicals through the colon, liver, kidneys, lungs, lymph and skin. Often, we just need to support them and take some time to slow down in order to allow the body to do its job.

Support the Body Especially the Large Intestine & Lungs

Specifically, fall is a great time to focus on detoxifying the large intestine and lungs. These organs are linked to the skin and respiration, so toxicity in these areas can contribute to problems like asthma, eczema, acne, rashes, pneumonia and dry skin–all of which are common in the colder weather. 

To support these organs and balance the body, it can be helpful to reduce added sugar, dairy, alcohol and grains from your diet. This can help decrease mucus and clear the respiratory and gastrointestinal tracts. 

Keep Warm

Pumpkin Spice SmoothieWarming spices like cinnamon and ginger that I feature in many of my Autumn Recipes (i.e. Autumn Harvest Skillet, Gluten-Free Coconut Ginger Granola Bars), also support and strengthen the respiratory and digestive tracts.  Baking with these spices, along with nutmeg and cloves, and incorporating them in smoothies, soups and teas are nice ways to enjoy their autumn flavors while reaping health benefits. 

Cardamom is an especially potent spice for detox. This spice is traditionally used in Ayurvedic medicine and increases the phase I enzymes in the liver that metabolize caffeine and other substances. Adding 3 cardamom seeds to coffee or caffeinated tea can help your liver more easily process the caffeine in these beverages.

Enjoy Seasonal Produce

rechargeIf you enjoy juicing, it is best to stick to seasonal fruits and veggies. Autumn produce like apples, leafy greens, beets, garlic and other root veggies are great additions to a cleansing juice, salad, or sauteed side dish. 

Beets are rich in antioxidants, vitamin A and manganese which help to purify the blood and cleanse the liver. Garlic is another detox powerhouse which also packs a lot of flavor.  It has anti-inflammatory properties and has been shown to help reduce cholesterol and keep arteries clear for optimal blood flow and cardiovascular health. Another veggie packed with nutrition that supports our natural detox pathways is kale. This versatile leafy green provides calcium, vitamin A and vitamin K along with a variety of phytonutrients and antioxidants which support detoxification.

Habitual rushing, multitasking and overwhelm overtax the mind and burden the nervous system. This can contribute to a variety of health issues including adrenal fatigue, cardiovascular disease, insomnia, indigestion and weight gain.
Start by saying no to outside influences that are over-draining your energy or distracting you from your authentic purpose. By taking steps to live an intentional life, you can make healthier choices to tune into your body’s natural rhythms and cleanse more effectively.
